What is Dividend Yield?

Dividend yield is a financial ratio that shows how much a company pays out in dividends each year relative to its stock price. It's expressed as a percentage.

Formula: Dividend Yield = (Annual Dividend Per Share ÷ Stock Price) × 100

For example, if a stock trades at $50 and pays $2 per share annually, the dividend yield is 4%. A higher yield means more income per dollar invested — but very high yields can signal risk.

What's a Good Dividend Yield?

There's no universal "good" yield — it depends on your goals and the sector. Generally:

  • 1–2%Typical for growth stocks — low yield, higher growth potential
  • 2–4%Balanced — solid income with moderate growth
  • 4–6%High yield — good for income investors, check sustainability
  • 6%+Very high — investigate carefully, may signal risk
